Happiness does not arrive in our lap. It’s not something that just turns up. It’s something that we need to work to create in our lives and over time make this your default of how you feel. It’s not some secret esoteric thing out of your reach. In any given moment you can chose to be happy or unhappy.
So that’s AMAZING news. You can chose happy but if you’ve been choosing not to be happy your choosing unhappy by default.
For me my story to happiness, after 2 years of depression and anxiety I started to see the truth. That happiness wasn’t EVER going to be from anything external to me, it wasn’t going to suddenly happen from:
- Meeting the guy
- A bigger business
- More money in the bank
- Losing weight
- Having a baby
- More holidays and always travelling
So then slowly over time I started to truly get to know, love and then be me more and more. For the last year I’ve put myself first more and more. My move, my business and my health and fitness all now work for me, with me as priority 1.

There is something called the Hedonic tone. That’s the overall framework for how you feel. This can either be negative or positive, that then influences all your thoughts for the day. So my hedonic tone is now HAPPY. But it’s taken some work and focus. So today I’ll share 4 simple brain hacks to help you be that happy person.
1) What Makes You Unhappy.
Sounds simple BUT remove what makes you unhappy as much as you can from your life. Whether that be people, work or your environment, until you remove this from your life it will keep being a trigger of unhappy.
I have a rule for life now, unless it excites me and it feels like a feck yes I MUST do this it’s a no.
2) Retrain your Brain
Our brain is designed for survival, so it’ll always focus in on the negative much more so than the positive. Think of the days when you’ve had a GREAT day, but one thing has gone a little wrong or not as you wanted. Where does your focus go? That’s the brains negative bias kicking in.
So we’re going to start to retrain your brain for the positive. Each day I invite you to write down three things that have happened that day that made you happy.
Simples but starts to get you focused on the positive NOT the negative.
3) Your Happy Recipe
You’ve felt every emotion you can ever feel in your life. So you will have a recipe for happy, sad angry and everywhere in between. The way the brain works it to recognise the trigger through the early warning system of the brain the amygdala and then from there send neurotransmitters to start the movement process for that trigger.
So today you’re invited to create your recipe for happy. What are you:
When you feel happy? Then make a plan to bring that into your life more. Simples again right?
4) Attitude of Gratitude
Gratitude is always from love, faith and belief so when you feel grateful you cannot feel in threat or fear. So I believe it’s an antidote to not feeling enough, so the more grateful you can start to be then the less that you’ll be searching for being enough.
So each day write down 3 things you’re grateful for. They can BIG things or small things the important part is consistently writing them down and starting to feel it more and more. Again Ive been doing this for long enough now that i feel it when I wake up, when I hear the sea or see the sun rising over the beach.
